The Umlauts, Fall 2005
Which team does he root for? All of them.
(Sioux Falls, SD, 08/24/06)-- Even though he is a bit partial to the O'Gorman Knights, where his kids went to school, when it comes to girls high school soccer, Coach Leigh feels the need to cheer on all seven area soccer teams. Of the 121 athletes on Sioux Falls and neighboring high school girls soccer teams, almost a third of them have been on the big fields at Yankton Trail under his guidance through the Sioux Falls Soccer Association or the two years he spent with the Great Plains Wildfire. "It's a great feeling to see how far the girls have progressed since middle school and fun to watch them play at the high school level," Anglin says. "It's also great to catch up with their parents for a quick visit. I can't imagine how many soccer moms I've given game and juice schedules to."Of the fall 2006 rosters, Anglin has coached 7 girls on the O'Gorman girls teams, and oddly enough, 11 on state tournament rival Roosevelt's teams. Most of them are JV players now, but he has players on 6 of the 7 area varsity teams. He also has four former teammates at Washington, three each at Brandon Valley, West Central, and Harrisburg, and two at Lincoln.
Rather than age with the players like most of the coaches, Anglin preferred to remain in the U14 age group for several years, letting the kids age through him... much like an elementary school teacher. While his teams have always been quite successful, he's quick to say that he doesn't teach soccer, he teaches children. "I hope something positive sticks with them that helps them later in life," he says.
Anglin keeps soccer fun with pre-game warm up music, goal posts made out of fun noodles, and stuffed animals on the sidelines.
This year, he is coaching in the U12 Advanced League... hoping to give players skills he would like them to have as they enter the U14 division. "I've never coached 8-v-8 before. I keep looking around wondering where my other three players are. I hope the parents bear with me while I get the formations down."
As a coach without a daughter on the team, what is the first thing he promises the parents? "My daughter won't get more playing time than your daughter."
And who will he cheer for the next time he is out at Yankton Trail? "Whichever one of my players has the ball!"
